I’ve decided to make more videos. I did buy an HD video camera last year after all. This means I need to learn how to edit, which means I need video editing software.
I downloaded a trial version of Adobe Premier Elements 7.0 for my PC and tried to use it to edit the videos I took in Hawaii. I didn’t like it. Ivan did the editing of our video on a Mac using Final Cut Express 4.0 and did like it – and what I saw of it I liked as well. Because my PowerBook is too old to use for HD editing and my PC won’t run Final Cut, I decided to get a newer Mac.
A friend of mine was looking to sell his old Intel-based Mac Mini, so I bought it. Then, I remembered that Fuad really needed a new computer. His PC is over 6 years old, slow as hell, and he had expressed interest in getting a Mac after his experience with the iPhone.
I thought the Mac Mini would be a cost effective way for him to test drive a Mac, which can be a bit pricey. So, I’ve spent the last few nights setting it up for him to use. We transferred all of his files, contacts, e-mails, and appointments. I installed VMWARE Fusion* and Windows, which elicited complaints from a certain Apple fundamentalist**, but is the only way to run his exercise physiology software and other programs we have an investment in.
Fuad loves it.
But now, I still need a newer Mac. So I’ve decided to replace my aging PowerBook with a new MacBook, then sell the four-year old PowerBook on craigslist. Amazingly, they still command $400 and up.
Hopefully, in a few months I’ll have some Hawaii videos to show off!

May I recommend going to the Apple Store online and looking at their refurbished MACs. That’s how I got my top of the line iMac for a little under $1,000. Same warranty as a new one and they all go through the same QC process as new MACs. There are bargains to be had!
The MacBook (not Pro) will only run Final Cut Express… Heck, it’s even got a newer version of iMovie which is quicker and sleeker than the earlier versions. Not to toot my own horn, but Apple also has personal training sessions to get you self sufficient in the software… that’s my job. ;)
Mike – Thanks! Yeah I made sure it would run Express. Can’t afford Final Cut Pro anyway :-)
RG – I will do that if the person I’m planning to buy one from next week flakes…
