For some reason I was inspired to buy the movie Xanadu on amazon.com so I could show it to Fuad. It came with a CD of the soundtrack, which I listened to this week for the first time in … 25 years? Longer?
I mentioned this to Chuck at the Brannan Gold’s last night. We’ve started going to Brannan on Friday nights because it is nearly empty, which is a rare thing in this city.
“I still remember all the words,” I said in between sets. “And I haven’t heard it in decades. It’s so 1980.” I was a freshman in high school when the movie came out. It fascinated me. This must have been my mom’s first clue that my bread was buttered on the other side.
“You could also show him Grease,” Chuck suggested. “Olivia was in that too.”
“That’s a good idea. You know, I think I had a crush on her at the time. Or something. She was so pretty.”
“Well she does look a lot like your mom,” he said before laughing. “Oh, wait, there’s something not right about having a crush on someone that looks like your mom.” He shook his head.
“You’re right, she does.” I’d never thought of that, at least consciously. “They are probably the same age and even now they both still look great.” They could easily pass for sisters.
“Yep,” Chuck agreed.
I think we’ll watch the movie this weekend. I’m interested to get Fuad’s take. If he likes it I’ll order Grease, because grease is the word.

Xanadu? Really? What’s next – Can’t Stop the Music?
Olivia has been making a number of television commercials for the Wii.
The song Xanadu sounds so good because she recorded it with the band Electric Light Orchestra, who were at their best then. The 80s are my absolutely favorite period in music, anyway.
Congrats to your Mom, if she looks as great as Olivia does. Now I know who you got this beauty gene from. Did you have Olivia’s posters on the wall? No kidding – I have Evangeline Lilly’s… Don’t worry, there’s Harvey Milk on another wall ;-)
Grease is the word ;-)
Robguy – Really? Guess I’d have to watch TV to know that :-)
Neil – my mom is a knockout. Long story. But – I actually look like a super-sized version of my dad.
Please, stop the 80′s nostalgia people! it’s bad enough wee saw neon colors back on the runways this season now this? God what’s next, Michael J. Fox back on t.v.? Wait, he is? Nooooooooo! The first person that says ‘just say no’ gets shot!
Neon colors on the runways? Hmmmm … I’m missing something. Or not. Who’s back on TV? Again, I don’t watch TV so I have no idea what you are talking about Kory…
I’m flashing…rollerskates…must stop…it will lead to….Cher!
Actually, I remember seeing it in the Wiltern on Wilshire the week it came out. Or part of it, I didn’t make it past the 3rd ELO song. For me it was much more of a 70s movie than an 80s movie. It seemed already dated the moment it was released. But like ABBA, the kitsch of the time has been recycled into something beautiful. There’s even a Broadway musical made from it.
After you’re done watching, down a couple Kamikazes and throw on season 1 of Miami Vice for a great trip into the neon glow of 1984!
A Xanadu fan? Hmm… I am beginning to think that bear-oriented gay men share sort sort of genetic magnet that draws them inexplicably to furry faces, sci-fi, and this particular film.
I remember being nothing less than ga-ga over this movie when it came out. Years later, when I met my partner, it turned out that he was a huge Xanadu-er. It is his favourite movie of all time.
You’d probably have to be watching TV in Australia.
Michael Fox is back on TV in the series Rescue Me, on Fox.
My best friend in high school loved Grease and we all called him ‘fag’. I hated the movie then (I’m sure so nobody would CALL ME THAT). He turned out to be straight as can be and me……..well. It is true I now like it and will watch it, (singing along), whenever I catch it on the tube. OHHH SANDY ;-(
Beauty School Drop out
ROCKO
Never seen that movie before. It is way before me. :) Might check it out sometime if it is worth your time introducing it here.
Be Careful.
No divorce court in the land would throw out “forced viewing of ‘Xanadu’ and/or ‘Grease’” as grounds for divorce action on a charge of mental cruelty.
come to think of it, it could be considered torture by the Geneva code as well.
LOL. Perhaps I should watch it first as a 40-something before inflicting it on Fuad?
